Homework From Arianna Huffington

Last week I had the privilege of going to see Arianna Huffington speak at The School of Life.

It was everything you would expect and more, inspiring, informative, funny and full of humility. She came across as a very sharp, very intelligent and very witty woman and a fabulous role model to us all.

She was there as part of her book tour for 'Thrive' which focuses on the 'third metric' of success - which, according to Arianna, is wellbeing. In the 21st Century we generally measure 'success' on the basis of money and power; if you're rich and or powerful then you are 'successful' according to society.

But, argues Arianna, success is about more than that. It's about being happy, being excited about life, living with passion, friends, family, being connected to yourself, and so much more. And yet, most of us seem to need a 'wake up call', like she had, before we start to focus on these areas of leading a successful life. Her's came when she fell down and hit her head and woke up in a pool of her own blood. She fell due to exhaustion from over working and 'burning out' - and so her newest mission and book (number 14!) is all about how to 'thrive' and find success, according to this third more authentic, more important metric.

And as that message is so in keeping with what we here at believe I wanted to share 3 simple steps that Arianna gave the audience as homework after the talk. 3 simple steps that she believes can have a dramatic effect on our wellbeing.

So, here goes:

1. Get more sleep
Unless you are one of the wise few who already gets all the rest you need, you have an opportunity to immediately improve your health, creativity and productivity, and sense of wellbeing. Start by getting just 30 minutes more sleep than you are getting now. The easiest way is to go to bed earlier, but you could also take a short nap during the day - or a combination of both.

2. Get rid of your electronics
Have a specific time at night when you regularly turn off your devices - gently escort them out of your bedroom. Disconnecting from the digital world will help you to reconnect to your wisdom, intuition and creativity. And when you wake up in the morning, don't start your day by looking at your smart phone. Take one minute - trust me you do have one minute - to breathe deeply, or be grateful, or set your intention for the day.

3. Meditate
Introduce five minutes of meditation into your day. Eventually, you can build up to fifteen or twenty minutes a day (or more), but even just a few minutes will open the door to creating a new habit - and all the proven benefits it brings.

And my favourite anecdote of the evening was when she told us about a quote she has up on the fridge, on the wall of her home and in her office. It says:

Don't push the river

Because often we try so hard, we work so ferociously and sometimes we just need to relax and let go and let things take their natural course.

That's definitely something that I for one, need to remember!

Which of Arianna's lessons do you need to work on more? Do let us know in the comments section below.

Do you work out the muscles in your back specifically? Do you ever do rows, dead lifts, lat pull downs or back raises?

Well, unless you're really into your fitness my guess is that you don't. But working out your back muscles is incredibly important, not just for the health and stability of your spine, but also for helping with any back pains or niggles as well as the aesthetic benefits this type of exercise has.

Want a great posture and to stop slouching?

Do you know how good it is for you and what an excellent source of protein those chick peas are?

Hummus is an excellent snack with celery sticks, raw carrots, wholemeal pitta breads or ryvitas. You can even use it on rice and couscous dishes to add texture, flavour and moisture.

So, if you don't currently make your own hummus, today's episode is for you, because, in today's episode we learn how to make hummus and go through a really simple recipe that you can make yourself with just a handful of ingredients in 3 mins (or less).

In today's episode of RebeccaFredericksTV we're in the gym learning about a great exercise that gives shape and definition to the chest area; the chest press on the incline, one of the best chest exercises for women.

This is a really isolating exercise and works to effectively target those pec muscles to give a really thorough chest workout.

We're doing this exercise today on the Smith Machine, but if you're worried about using this machine, or you don't have one in your gym, don't worry. You can do this exercise just as effectively with 2 dumbbells.

To be safe, select a slightly lighter weight than you would on the machine. You can always up the weight if you find that you're still pressing away easily after 8 reps.

Today I'm launching my Interview Series. And I'm so excited.

The Interview Series is all about ordinary women who have created extraordinary success in their lives. Whatever that success means to them. In this first season I sit down with opera singers, jewellery designers, pelvic floor experts, TV presenters, nutritionists, CEOs and more, to talk balance, business, regrets, intuition, learning from mistakes, motivation, and success.

This is a completely new type of interview series where amazing women share their wisdom, the greatest lessons they've ever learnt, the secrets to their success, what they would do back in time to tell their younger selves and what success means to them.

This is girl chat, over a cup of tea, with incredible and inspiring women. So, please do join us and let me know, in the comments section below each episode, what you've taken away from each of these wonderful women!
